Military officials have estimated that 20% of the deaths suffered in current battle theaters could be prevented with an effective means to stop high-pressure bleeds. To save lives, hemorrhaging must be stopped within seconds, and hemostasis must be maintained for as long as possible.

The irregular shape and severe depth of ballistic wounds can make the use of conventional hemostatic agents, including bandages, ineffective. Wound location can make the use of tourniquets and application of pressure impossible. And the high force of arterial bleeding overcomes standard gauze.

When the US Army challenged the scientific community to discover the perfect remedy, it said the product must meet these seven exacting standards:

  1. Stops large vessel arterial bleeding within 3 minutes, even through a pool of blood, and often achieves this goal in 2 minutes
  2. Ready to use – no mixing or special preparation
  3. Simple to apply by the wounded individual, a buddy or a medic/EMT with minimal training
  4. Lightweight and durable
  5. Stable and functional at room temperature for at least 2 years and in extreme ambient temperatures for several weeks
  6. Safe to use, posing no risk of either injury to the tissue or of transmitting human bloodborne pathogens
  7. Affordable

WoundStat™ meets every one of the above listed criteria.

PLUS:

WoundStat
  • Does NOT burn
  • Clots ANTI-COAGULATED human blood

Product Description:

WoundStat™ has been scientifically proven to meet the need. It answers every issue. Its per-unit cost is competitive with all hemostatic agents on the market today – but none of them can match its effectiveness. Because no two wounds are alike, WoundStat™ is granular, allowing it to be poured into, mold and adhere to irregularly shaped and extensive wounds. And, unlike other products, it has shown no evidence of side effects. The mineral based product, produced in the United States, is offered in a moisture-impermeable, sterile, 5.5-ounce foil pouch that can be easily opened by hands or teeth.

Application Instructions:

  1. Tear open WoundStat™ pouch at perforations
  2. Empty contents of pouch directly into wound
  3. Firmly pack WoundStat™ into all areas of the wound
  4. Hold pressure for up to 3 minutes
  5. If seepage occurs, perform additional packing of WoundStat
  6. Wrap and secure a bandage to maintain pressure during patient transport
  7. If bleeding continues, remove bandage and apply a second application of WoundStat

  8. Do not remove the previous application!

  9. Seek medical care as soon as possible and show empty pack to medical personnel.

Hemostasis is achieved temporarily for a period of at least three hours.

Literature:

WoundStat™ has been tested extensively in animal trauma models followed by the US Army and the US Navy/Marine Corps. Using these models, considered by some as the "gold standard" for testing ballistic wound treatments, Virginia Commonwealth University found that an early version of WoundStat™ enabled animal survival in 100 percent of testing cases, while products currently used by the military failed. That study has been published in the August 2007 issue of the Journal of Trauma. (www.jtrauma.com ; Ward, K. et al)
